According to studies, neti pot is safe for most people. It rarely causes side effects. If side effects do occur, they are usually mild (not serious).

When you buy a neti pot, you usually get an insert that defines how to use it – read this guideline completely so you can use it properly!

Warm compresses

Applying warm compresses can help keep your nasal passages moist.

You can also try with steaming water. Use a deep bowel and fill steaming water into it. Then with a towel around your head, position your face a few inches over the water so you can breathe the steam in. Do it carefully!

Avoid irritants!

When your body is fighting against infection, exposure to household irritants (such as hairsprays, any strong odor of fumes, cigarette smoke, or cleaning products) may make the problem more difficult to relieve – particularly true if you’re susceptible. So avoid them! If you smoke, stop it – at least until your sinusitis goes away!

Spicy foods

If you love spice, spicy foods (such as curry, mustard, wasabi, mustard, and hot peppers) may help cope with your sinusitis symptoms. They can help clear and open your nasal cavities. Just make sure to not eat them too much! See more about what to eat with sinusitis in here!

Is there any supplement for sinusitis?

It’s not common to treat sinus infection with supplement. But if you do look for this option, bromelain may help. It is a protein derived from pineapple steams. It may help ease swelling of your sinusitis.

But if you’re also taking particular medications, talk to your doctor first. Because there is a chance for bromelain to interact with your medication! And take it properly, particularly for the exact dosing instructions.

Should you take antibiotics?

Although sinus infection can be caused by bacterial infection, but the use of antibiotics is not always necessary. Furthermore, the infection may have nothing to do with bacterial infection since it can also be caused by virus or fungi.

So, don’t take antibiotics right away! Too much use of antibiotics (using them indiscriminately) can be potential to cause antibiotic resistance, a condition in which the bacteria can resist the antibiotic.

If your sinus infection lasts longer than usual or gets worse, see a doctor for more advice! In general, your doctor usually suggests watchful-waiting for a few days to see if the problem improves without antibiotics.

What else?

Again, many times sinus infection is not serious, and even sometimes it will relieve on its own. But in a few cases, it could be serious and more difficult to improve – especially true if it is linked to certain condition such as nasal polyps or deviated nasal septum. If home remedies and over-the-counters don’t help, your doctor may ask you to take imaging tests (such as CT-scan) to find the underlying condition of the problem.
